Provoked Violence, Unchecked for Hours The New York Times used videos filmed by journalists, witnesses and protesters to analyze hours of clashes — and a delayed police response — at a pro-Palestinian encampment on Tuesday. On Tuesday night, violence erupted at an encampment that pro-Palestinian protesters had set up on April 25. The videos showed counterprotesters attacking students in the pro-Palestinian encampment for several hours, including beating them with sticks, using chemical sprays and launching fireworks as weapons. The melee began when a group of counterprotesters started tearing away metal barriers that had been in place to cordon off pro-Palestinian protesters. 12:26 a.m.Sean Beckner-Carmitchel via ReutersAt times, counterprotesters swarmed individuals — sometimes a group descended on a single person.

Maxar Technologies Visual Investigations The $2.8 Billion Hole in U.S. Sanctions on Iran A Times investigation reveals how lax government oversight allowed shadowy oil tankers, covered by American insurance, to fund Iran’s regime. The American Club is one of only 12 major insurers of its kind, and the only one based in the United States. By then, the tankers had transported at least $2.8 billion in crude oil, based on the lowest reported prices of Iranian oil in 2023. The Treasury office has publicly enforced sanctions on the American Club only once in the past 20 years. Ultimately, the office said the American Club did “not appear to have been willful or reckless” and the case was settled.

The software-as-a-service provider is "aggressively pursuing our ambition to absolutely be an AI-first company," Chris Bedi, the chief digital-information officer at ServiceNow, told Business Insider. "We know we're early innings, especially with gen AI, but we are pushing on it hard." We started experimenting and doing stuff with gen AI super early. I would say underestimating how quickly gen AI would progress.

UK's musicMagpie will keep seeking buyers as BT ends talks

Nov 27 (Reuters) - MusicMagpie (MMAG.L) said on Monday it will continue to seek buyers after telecoms group BT (BT.L) confirmed it will not make an offer for the British online retailer of used smartphones and electronic products. Shares in musicMagpie fell 19% to a nearly three-month low of 16.35 pence, giving it a market value of just over 17.5 million pounds ($21.81 million). The seller of second-hand DVDs and computer games last week said it was in early-stage talks with BT and Aurelius Group regarding a possible buyout offer. Neither BT or Aurelius provided a reason for dropping out of the takeover talks. As of Friday's close, musicMagpie stock had lost almost 90% of its value since its market debut in April 2021 as a cost-of-living squeeze hurt sales.

But by the time Tharu was growing up in the 1970s, the tiger population had dwindled to just 20% of its peak. As an adult, he became involved in forest conservation and was committed to protecting their habitat. Similarly, the creation of artificial watering holes has also helped to disperse the tiger population and direct animals away from local communities. “It is crucial to prioritize community development, to ensure that communities become advocates for tiger conservation,” Paudel adds. Even as human-animal conflicts increase, Tharu says the local communities are happy to see the tiger population flourish.

U.S. officials visiting South Africa this week to meet African trade ministers will face calls to reauthorise the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) which expires in 2025. Apparel companies and industry insiders warn that Africa risks a once-in-a-generation shift away from Chinese manufacturing passing it by, with an estimated 240,000 to 290,000 jobs such as Nasimiyu's under threat. Apparel has been the standout success story of AGOA, which launched in 2000 to help develop African economies and foster democracy. African apparel exports under the programme reached nearly $1.4 billion last year, double the amount pre-AGOA. A United Airlines Airbus A319-100 jet takes off from Washington National Airport in Washington, U.S., August 9, 2017. The latest order is the second major aircraft purchase by United over the past year. In December, it unveiled a huge order of 100 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 100 737 MAXs. The large 787 order is likely to raise further questions about the future of outstanding United orders for 45 Airbus A350s which have already been deferred to at least 2030. Nocella said while A350 is a "great machine" and there is no change in the company's order, United is focused on its 787 fleet in the short-run.

A United Airlines Airbus A319-100 jet takes off from Washington National Airport in Washington, U.S., August 9, 2017. Airbus, Boeing and United declined to comment. Demand has rebounded for long distance widebody jets to meet international travel demand. REUTERS/Andrew Kelly Acquire Licensing RightsSept 26 (Reuters) - United Parcel Service (UPS.N) said on Tuesday it would hire more than 100,000 seasonal workers to handle the 2023 holiday rush, a similar number of employees it hired a year earlier during the same period. Both UPS and rival FedEx Corp (FDX.N) hire thousands of temporary workers each year to move more parcels between the months of October and January. Analysts expect holiday sales to grow at a slower pace this year as high inflation eats into household budgets. A report from career consultancy firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas showed that weaker spending and increased labor costs would result in U.S. retailers hiring the lowest number of seasonal workers this year since 2008.
